Healthy and Sustainable Pre School Scheme
The Welsh Government’s Healthy and Sustainable Pre-school Scheme has been developed as an extension of the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Scheme and National Quality Award. It has eight specific phases:
- 1. Preliminary phase
- 2. Nutrition and oral health
- 3. Physical activity/active play
- 4. Mental and emotional health
- 5. Wellbeing and relationships, environment
- 6. Safety
- 7. Hygiene
- 8. Workplace health and wellbeing
The nutrition and oral health section of the scheme reflects a whole setting approach to food, nutrition and oral health, incorporating the promotion of a healthy balanced diet based on current national guidance and good practice in relation to oral health.
Designed to Smile
We work in partnership with Designed to Smile, the all Wales oral health programme.
Designed to Smile is a targeted National Oral Health Improvement Programme. Its primary focus is the improvement of the dental health of children in Wales.
The programme’s website provides a useful national resource for dental teams, parents, teachers and other health professionals
How can we help?
The Community Food and Nutrition Skills for Early Years course equips staff in these settings with the nutrition knowledge and skills to fully implement the scheme’s nutrition actions. The Gold Standard Healthy Snack Award and The Tiny Tums Best Practice Certificate align to the nutrition and oral health assessment and can help settings to achieve these criteria.
