Come and Cook – WeMindTheGap

A group of young people who are part of the ‘WeGrow’ programme led by the social mobility organisation WeMindTheGap have successfully completed the 6-week Come and Cook course where they learnt more about eating well and cooking healthy nutritious food.

WeMindTheGap works closely with under-served young people as part of a yearlong programme of support to ensure they have a trusted person to turn to, a positive role model, a safe place to live, a healthy meal, confidence, and basic skills. Their programmes include work experience, coaching, mentoring, workshops, adventures, and experiences – all designed to help young people to fulfil their potential.

Sian Hughes ‘WeBelong’ Community Maker, from WeMindTheGap achieved her Level 2 Community Food and Nutrition Skills Course accreditation, followed by the Come and Cook Facilitator training enabling her to deliver confidently and competently the Come and Cook course. She has successfully run Come and Cook with 9 young people undertaking the ‘WeGrow’ programme, and who she affectionally refers to as ‘Gappies.’

Sian comments ‘the aim is to improve knowledge of what a healthy diet looks like, enhance cooking skills and provide Gappies with the opportunity to try new foods. So far, the group have made mini pizzas, and learned about food safety and hygiene, what a healthy balanced diet is and the Eatwell Guide’

Sarah Powell-Jones, Dietetic Assistant Practitioner was part of the dietetic team who trained Sian, and she was delighted to be welcomed along to one of the sessions.

Sarah comments ‘I was so impressed by the young people. It was wonderful to see the nutrition knowledge and understanding that came out of the discussions during the session. It was clear to see how much learning was taking place as the young people referred to information they’d learnt from the previous session. It was also wonderful to see them all working together to make fruit muffins and mini cheesecake pots from the Nutrition Skills for Life recipe book. I am really looking forward to seeing the end of course feedback and learning how we may continue to support similar groups of young people in accessing practical food and nutrition skill building opportunities.’ If you want to look at more information on this organisation and the great work they do, visit their Facebook page: WeMindTheGap.
